The Old Red Lady of the NYT Comments on Maudlin Theatrics and Hillary’s Tears.
As if opening a controversial play in the Bernard Shaw Era, with the script and stage directions in constant disarray from the playwright, Hillary waxes all soft, mushy and misty-eyed during the penultimate moments of the instant war. She barely beat Obama, an upstart, who humiliated her in Iowa, and not exactly the favorite of the New York Times as we have read recently.
The Old Red Lady of the Old Gray Lady is apparently not buying the crocodile tears and maudlin performing arts of the junior Senator from New York. From today’s op-ed article we read the follow catty comments:
“She won her Senate seat after being embarrassed by a man. She pulled out New Hampshire and saved her presidential campaign after being embarrassed by another man. She was seen as so controlling when she ran for the Senate that she had to be seen as losing control, as she did during the Monica scandal, before she seemed soft enough to attract many New York voters.”
Hillary’s appeal has been, historically, directly proportional to her visible status as some kind of victim.
“Getting brushed back by Barack Obama in Iowa, her emotional moment here in a cafe and her chagrin at a debate question suggesting she was not likable served the same purpose, making her more appealing, especially to women, particularly to women over 45.”
Apparently, Maureen is not buying this recital as the past columns may indicate although she has to admit that it did attract some other old ladies from a liberal state that lurks in the shadows of Boston. Hillary is known to have all her stuff well scripted. This may have been a local essay in feminist maudlinism, but few believe it was authentic. Hillary is more like the Queen of Hearts than Snow White and rates the new moniker as Colonel Klebb.
Maureen sums up in this rather, but assertive manner: “But there was a whiff of Nixonian self-pity about her choking up. What was moving her so deeply was her recognition that the country was failing to grasp how much it needs her. In a weirdly narcissistic way, she was crying for us. But it was grimly typical of her that what finally made her break down was the prospect of losing.”[Emphasis is mine here and below].
Many can never approach even some temporary agreement with the stodgy Old Gray Lady and her perpetual anti-Capitalist screeds, but this one seems to be an excellent characterization of Clintoonery. We wonder if there are any limits to what the Clintons will do for power. The comments on bawling and narcissism prompt us to consult some mental health experts for clarification; both Old (Red) Ladies need come couch time to sort out this theorem. The Gray One (also a ‘lady’ of repute) is a known intellectual lost case.
And finally:
“At her victory party, Hillary was like the heroine of a Lifetime movie, a woman in peril who manages to triumph. Saying that her heart was full, she sounded the feminist anthem: “I found my own voice.”
This sounds like a contrived mixture of the emotional elements of Perils of Pauline blended in with Pygmalion.
The essential questions here are:
[1] Was this genuine (with the stipulation that she must something extra by ‘beating’ the spread)?
[2] Can she continue to stay ahead of Obama [the Fairy Tale man!]?
All this has to be sorted out in the upcoming contests. The polls are sloppy at best and frequently stilted and we do not know how much ballot box stuffing from her sycophants in New York eased her to victory. She is not exactly railing against illegal immigrants votes and we have no way to track these felons in New Hampshire or California. Away from New York or Massachusetts, she will be on her own in Nevada and South Carolina. The latest polls have Obama up about a dozen points. This will be the acid test for Clintoonery.
Note, please, that the ‘issues’ are not mentioned in this article. Hillary remains the eternal advocate of tax increases for any and all reasons, a mandatory stance for any Neo Marxist or other far leftist sponsor. Dowd wonders if she will need Bill in further battles as he reminds us of the residual reminiscences of the Clinton Fatigue and Clintoonery. Her attack on Obama that President Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act is inaccurate given the fact that the Executive Branch doesn’t pass anything and the Republicans passed the CRA over the objections of Democrats.
The issues of illegal immigration, higher new taxes Global Warming and others were conveniently left out of the current contests. It would be interesting to ask Hillary how her proposed massive tax hikes and even more massive socially spending programs, could help out the economy. That won’t happen. There isn’t even the mention of corruption and crimes from the Clintoons.
But, this may now be an accepted radical revisionism of history. The NYY gives little truck to facts and redefines the ‘truth’ as necessary to convince their victims how to vote. Dowd does little to support Hillary in this piece. We have to stray from our routine suspicion of Maureen’s views in this case. The facts, more obtuse than the truth, will be apparent after the new two primaries discounting Michigan, of course. Maureen may be right on in this case. She has been on top of the Clinton case a few times.
